The Role of Mentorship in Combating Imposter Syndrome

Who do you think you are?

This has become a constant question I’ve had to push asides every time I have to go up the stage and into the spotlight to be the amazing public speaker everyone asides me and the voices in my head think I am.

In my public speaking journey, I have gotten used to the nagging feeling that I am a fraud and my success is a lucky streak that is bound to end. I cannot do away with the sneaky little voices in my head that keep whispering “You’re not good enough”. These voices surely lack home training because they disregard the loud ovations I get at the end of every speech and still taunt me. What insolence!

At this point, I believe I am living someone else’s life and don’t even deserve it. What if my success is actually a lucky streak and the voices in my head are right that the end is near?

Dear reader, I am sure you can relate to the story I wrote about in the preceding paragraphs. If not, then in King James English, “the truth is not in you.”

But for those who can relate, first of all, let us call this feeling “The Imposter Syndrome“. Yes! That is what it is. The sneaky little voice in your head that whispers, “You are not good enough”, just as you’re about to conquer the world. But fear not, there is a beacon of hope in this sea of self-doubt: Drums roll…

Mentorship – the hero without a cape

Mentors are like the fairy godmothers of the professional world. With a wave of their magic wand (or a flick of their email), mentors can transform your imposter syndrome into a badge of honor. And here’s how they go about it;

The Power of Perspective

A Mentor has been there, They have navigated the treacherous waters of self-doubt and emerged victorious. When they share their stories, you realize that feeling like an imposter is just part of the journey. It is not a sign that you’re unworthy; it’s a sign that you’re human.

The Reality Check

Sometimes, you need a gentle reminder that you are not, in fact, a fraud. Mentors can provide that reality check. They see your potential, your achievements, your baby steps and your growth. When they tell you that you are capable and deserving, it’s hard to argue because they’ve been in your shoes.

The Knowledge Transfer

A mentor isn’t just there to boost your ego; they are there to share their hard-earned wisdom, obtained after they had battled and won.. They can teach you the ropes, show you the shortcuts, and help you avoid the pitfalls. With their guidance, you will start to feel more confident in your abilities because you’ll actually know what you’re doing.

The Network Effect

A quick secret? Imposter syndrome thrives in isolation! But these heroes without capes – mentors, can introduce you to a network of professionals who have all felt like imposters at some point. And what better company? Because suddenly, you’re part of a club, and it’s a lot harder to feel like a fraud when you’re surrounded by people who believe in you.

Growth Mindset

With your mentor’s guidance, you’ll learn to view challenges as opportunities for growth. No more imposter syndrome-induced paralysis!

The Accountability Partner

A mentor can hold you accountable. They can set expectations, provide feedback, and push you out of your comfort zone. When you know someone is watching your progress, you’re less likely to give in to self-doubt and more likely to prove yourself – not just to them, but to yourself.

Self-Compassion

Your mentor will teach you to be kind to yourself (yes, it’s a skill!). They’ll show you that everyone makes mistakes and that it’s okay not to be perfect.

The Emotional Support System

Let us face it, combating imposter syndrome is as much about the heart as it is about the head. I mean, see you quivering from the outbursts just now. A Mentor can offer emotional support, a shoulder to cry on, or a virtual high-five. They’re there to celebrate your wins and commiserate over your losses.

In conclusion, mentorship is the secret weapon in the battle against imposter syndrome (as we’ve all agreed to call it, right?). Think of mentorship like having a superhero bouncer who’s got your back. They help you navigate the treacherous waters of self-doubt, remind you of your awesomeness, and provide a healthy dose of reality checks. It’s the guiding light that turns self-doubt into self-confidence. So if you’re feeling like an imposter, seek out a mentor. They might just be the fairy godmother you need to turn Cinderella into a princess.
