We can all agree that job hunting can be an exhausting and time-consuming process, coupled with the fact that there’s an alarming inflation rate in the country. So you say to yourself “ I need a job and fast”. It’s more like a race against time, if you snooze, you lose and well, probably starve.
Thinking of how to land your next project or job but don’t know what your recruiters are looking for? Keep reading!
Hiya Street Squad! Yeah, no one’s smiling including me, we’ve all been eating frustration as a daily bread. Even the bible said “Man shall not live by bread alone”, but we all seem to be doing that lately. Aren’t we committing a sin or something? *I dunno, don’t look at me*.
Just imagine job hunting as a course with a series of processes and learning. You have to stay afloat with the trend to hit your target. Recruiters are constantly updating the requirements they look for in a candidate and benevolently we’ve compiled a list of must-have skills.
We have two forms of skills:
- Hard skills (technical skills such as programming, copywriting, marketing, data analysis etc). It’s a skill that’s needed to get a job done.
- Soft skill( Non-technical skill such as communication, problem solving, team work, time management etc). It’s an essential skill that displays how you interact with people.
So in this article, our area of focus is Soft skills. It is a skill that has been undervalued over the years but with the emergence of the 21st century, more emphasis has been placed on this skill. The question raving through your mind now is “What is a soft skill”.
It’s a trait or character you possess that shows how you relate to people and blend it into your work. Yep! That simple, no hidden metaphorical agenda behind the word. It is just a skill that resonates with your personality.

There are certain soft skills you must have to qualify for a job role. They are;
- Communication skills
“I’m an introvert”, “ I don’t know how to approach people”, “ I can’t hold conversations”. If you’re having that mindset, just don’t bother applying for a job. How do you expect to work efficiently if you’re mute? How do you ask questions? To achieve success in your job, communication should be prioritized between clients, colleagues, and customers. That way it eases the flow of messages and information among workers, which in turn gives room for career growth, and who knows you might get the “best staff award” of the month or year.
- Time management skills
How productive are you? Do you schedule your task ahead of time to stay proactive? Proper planning helps you stay ahead of deadlines. If you’re one who utilises scheduling tools, you’re one step away from hire. So thumbs up!
- Problem-solving skills
Imagine getting to work on a beautiful day, not that you’re excited or anything but you have to go cause you’re getting paid and a problem arises at work. There’s a deadline to meet, you’d have to think fast, deal with the problem with minimal or no damage. You’d have to bring your creativity to the peak, explore different angles to the problem, think of new solutions. That’s a skill that impresses every boss and you might be a first choice when it comes to a promotion.
- Teamwork skills
A team player adds to the success of any team. They are active listeners, empathic, goal getters and collaborative without putting their need above others. They’re the catalyst for a productive environment that breeds growth and effective communication amongst colleagues.
Getting a job is a job itself. Tiring and annoying to say the least. There are few jobs out there with an overwhelming sea of applicants. The best bet is to keep learning, constantly improve your profile and include relevant skills tailored to the job description. Take advantage of these few tips that resonates round essential soft skills every applicant must have.
